Many people never finish a book. They can’t study effectively and so do badly on tests, which includes reading section like TOEIC. The stack of reading practice papers they need to or want to read keeps getting higher because they can’t see to stay awake long enough to finish any. Are you one of these people? Do you find yourself nodding off every time you pick up a reading passage? Start by not ever letting yourself fall asleep while reading. If you start to feel yourself drifting off, stop reading immediately and wake yourself up. Do a few jumping jacks, drink some coffee, and take a cold shower. Doing these things will tell your brain that reading shouldn’t make it sleepy, it should energize it. Eventually, your brain will learn its new clues and stop triggering the getting-ready-to-sleep mechanism each time a text or TOEIC materials are in your hands.
Sitting up straight is the next thing you need to do to keep yourself awake. It is very difficult to stay awake if you are lounging in your bed-your brain thinks a bed is for sleeping in. It is also very difficult to stay awake when lying on the sofa-that’s supposed to be for relaxing. Find a stiff chair with a straight back and sit in that or even stand.
Interesting books is important! It is difficult for your brain to shut down for sleep if it is consumed with what you are reading. At least until you get over the habit of falling asleep while reading, read books that really interest you and that you get into. Pay close attention to each word and don’t allow your eyes to skim the page. Think about what you are reading. Consider it. Do you think you know what is going to happen next? Be an active reader. Reading is an activity and many people forget that. While doing an activity you need to be doing something. Even if you are just sitting with a book in your hands, your brain should be doing mental gymnastics.
Reading at the proper time is important as well. If you read a few pages of a book and then go to sleep, you teach your brain to get ready for sleep whenever you read. Figure out what time you are the most awake and read then. For some people they are the most awake right after they wake up in the morning. Others are most awake in the evenings. If you are sleepy already every afternoon around three, you don’t want to try and read then or you will be likely to fall asleep.
Reading aloud sometimes can help wakening you up. Yes, it sounds silly, but reading aloud triggers a different section of your brain. If you are an audible learner, this may even help you learn better. Read the book aloud to yourself in a mirror and it will be impossible for you to fall asleep.
Finally, you don’t have to go through these extreme measures forever. Read a book or two while following at least a few of these tips and your brain will learn reading is not sleeping time. After that, you can sit on the couch and read or not have to drink a cup of coffee mid-book. It probably still isn’t a good idea to lie in bed and read before bed because you may have a relapse. It would be like you were telling your brain to do two different things at once, to sleep in your bed and to be awake and read. This would end up making you have to start over again and it’s simpler to just avoid the situation entirely.
